DCPS In Search Of 24 New Principals !

The Rhee administration will replace twenty-four principals this school year. Some principals RESIGNED, some RETIRED and some WERE FIRED by the Rhee administration. Some panel interviews for principal selections were held at the School Without Walls beginning last week.

*According to the DCPS website 24 of the principals listed below, with the exception of Luke C. Moore Academy are To Be Determined (TBD) . Ironically Dr. Reginald Elliot is still listed as of 7/15/09 even though he reports he was not re-instated by Rhee.

Here's the list of schools (below) awaiting new principals officially or have principals yet to be determined. *This to be determined (TBD) list was identified on the DCPS website on 7/15/09 and not by The Washington Teacher. Any concerns about certain principals not being listed officially should be directed to DCPS.

  1. Are you saying that all those listed who do not have "resigned" or "Retire" next to their names have been fired?

Do we know how many of these were hired by Rhee?

  2. Fyi, Bancroft's principal can be listed as retired.

  3. Thank you, Candi, for this info. Though I had heard that the principal of Bancroft had retired. I checked and my school's principal is not on the list; there were concerns.

  4. What I am saying is that some principals retired, some resigned and some were not re-instated by the Rhee administration.

I am using the DCPS website as one of my official data sources. On July 15th, the 23 principals that I listed were still listed as To Be Determined.

You be the judge of what this means to you. Even if a principal has been hired, officially they have not been listed on our DCPS website.

  5. I am in amazement that all of those principals can be fired but the terrible excuses for principals at Ron Brown M.S and Elliot/Hine still remain.

  6. I have listed principals as resigning or retiring in those cases where I have been able to confirm that this is the case.

  7. I believe everyone should sue through the EEOC regardless of occupation. Something is terribly wrong when an inexperienced, uncredentialed, rude and arrogant tyrant can ride in on her broomstick and capriciously and arbitrarily terminate people. GO TO THE EEOC. FIGHT THIS IN RECORD NUMBERS!!

  8. I just did a double take with Barnard, a school that made huge gains either last school or the one previous on their DC CAS scores. Is their principal actually out? Retiring, resigned or terminated? Candi, do you know?

  9. Maury's principal this past year was an interim. The principal selection committee declined to interview her for the permanent position.

  10. This list may be dated. I know that Janney had a new principal selected before the school year ended and she has been working since July 1st.

  11. This list was just posted on the www.k12.dc.us DCPS website under school profiles. Look under the principal column to the far right pf the spreadsheet to see either a principal's name or TBD. In some cases, Rhee was waiting for DCCAS scores to come in to decide on some principals' fates. Not all schools are out of control schools with low student achievement. There are principal vacancies at Murch, Stoddert, Janney and Hearst, all west of the park.

  12. Ross ES principal's focus was only about obtaining high DC CAS scores. The entire year consisted of constant drilling and filling out packages of tests given supposedly in previous years. As it became clear after the DC CAS exam that chunks of this year's test were given in worksheet form, several parents went and complained. To my knowledge there has been no action taken. She was a Rhee appointee and it seems she will stay no matter what.

  13. If things in DCPS are going as well as Rhee claims they are going and if the schools are making so much progress, then why does she feel the need to replace 20+ principals?

  14. So did the principal at Janney (an interim). She left DCPS.

  15. The principal at Janney was forced to resign, she had no desire to leave.

  16. Correction regarding the principal of Ross ES: She was hired by Clifford Janney and served as principal of Bunker Hill ES for three years. When Bunker Hill was put on the list of schools to be closed, she was selected to be principal of Ross ES by a panel made up of members of the Ross community.

If you object to test preparation and multiple standardized tests, I suggest that you make your views known to Chancellor Rhee, Mayor Fenty, Council Member Jack Evans, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and President Obama. Also, please get in touch with the Editorial Board of the Washington Post. They all need to hear from you.

  17. The resigned/retired/fired labels probably say more about a principal's immediate alternatives than about how volitional his or her departure from the school was.

  18. The Janney principal was told to either resign or be fired...not because of Rhee but because she didn't do her job!

  19. Who hired the Janney Principal ?

  20. The Janney Hiring committee... parents, staff and community members!

  21. The Janney principal was hired late last summer in a second round principal selection. The second round was necessitated as two prospective candidates from the first round turned down offers. She was a mismatch from the beginning (a former H.S. vice principal from Montgomery Co. with no DC or elementary experience) and was asked not to return by a panel comprised of teachers, admin staff, parents and community members. I fault whoever within Rhee's camp was responsible for putting her up for a job she clearly wasn't qualified to hold. However, with that said, Rhee and company were responsive to parent and teacher complaints and didn't go against the panel recommendation when making the decision whether or not to renew her contract. The new hire comes out of some kind of DCPS principal institute (don't know the details) and has received rave reviews from teachers and parents alike.

  22. I fault the Rhee camp for whatever they said or did to scare away the two initially acceptable candidates.

I suspect the eventual principal was not particularly eager to take the job and maybe that the Rhee administration was not so happy about her either, but had no other options at that point, so actively recruited her.

Too bad, as Janney is a plum school that shouldn't have problems recruiting good staff.
