Inconvenient Truth

Premiere Screening & Panel Discussion

Benning Public Library

3935 Benning Road, NE

Washington, DC 20019

Please join WTU President Nathan Saunders, General Vice President Candi Peterson, community and education leaders for a premiere screening and panel discussion about the documentary, "The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman." This documentary was written and directed by New York City public school teachers and parents in response to the misleading film, "Waiting for Superman." It depicts the real-life experiences of public school parents and educators to show how these so-called reforms are actually hurting education. It also highlights the kinds of real reform - inside schools and in our society as a whole - that are urgently needed to genuinely transform education in this country.

**WTU members are encouraged to attend this free event and participate in an engaging discussion about the challenges facing education reform in general and in the District of Columbia Public school system.**

  1. Candi,

I wish I could be in DC to see this documentary. Hopefully, I'll have the opportunity to see it soon in my area.

I have a suggestion for your teachers:

Starting in the fall, teachers should keep very careful records of student progress. Pretests and samples of student work in September should be filed. Ideally the teacher should invite parents and other professionals to view the children being tested. Parents and administrators should be kept informed about student progress throughout the year. During the year, frequent examples of student work (compositions, chapter tests, etc.)should be placed in the child's folder. In this way, if a teacher is unfairly described as "not effective" she will have a lot of evidence demonstrating good student progress throughout the year. This could prove invaluable if the teacher contests her evaluation.

    I hope this is helpful.

  2. Candi,

I can't believe the union is sponsoring a viewing of the movie "Bad Teacher" tomorrow (6/24).

This is what you are spending my dues money on???!!!

During a time when teachers are being vilified and treated unprofessionally, the WTU thinks a movie that spoofs a bad teacher is funny?

I don't care if they are joking around or if it is an obvious exaggeration. This is not the time to be laughing at bad teacher jokes.

It makes me wonder how disconnected you all have become now that you are out of the school system. What an embarrassment!

  3. I ordered my own copy of "The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting For Superman" since I missed the WTU June 18th screening.

All I can say is...please visit the website and order this DVD. This is a MUST SEE! Finally someone is telling the truth. What we are going through as DCPS educators is a scam against education where the children are the ultimate losers!
