Some Say Rhee Hires New Teachers Despite Budget Shortfall

I have received emails confirming sightings of new 'teacher hires' beginning the second week of November, only a month after the notices of layoffs were given to 388 DC teachers and school staff. This is pretty darn amazing given the budget pressures that DC public schools is reportedly faced with. Ever wonder why Chancellor Rhee has yet to implement a freeze on hiring and spending practices given the twenty million dollar deficit DC schools is up against ? Well let me make an educated guess why this administration continues to spend willy nilly. Perhaps Rhee does not want to freeze spending so that she can continue to hire staff on the DL (down-low) to replace teachers who were unfairly laid off.

Not only have there been sightings of new teacher  hires in local DC public schools but unnamed sources report that new hires have been spotted at the DCPS central office personnel department as well. Shortly after teacher and staff layoffs, copies of an October 19 email from Morgan Gieseke, a Teach DC recruiter in the Office of The Chancellor (OOC) circulated to perspective 2009-10 DCPS teacher applicants stating the following:

If you are still interested in teaching for DCPS during the 2009-2010 school year, please let me know. We will resume the selection process next week and will only contact you if you have indicated to me that you would like to remain in the pool of applicants. If you would like to only be considered for 2010-2011 vacancies, please withdraw your application and reapply in January. If you have already found a position with DCPS and we have sent you this email in error, please submit your school information. Your response is requested by Wednesday, October 21st. If you have any questions, please let me know. DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL. Please click on the following link to complete the two minute survey:

Here's what my sources are saying about the status of new teacher hires:

Dear Candi:
"There are 25 new teaching fellows that were hired on Monday, November 9, 2009. These teaching fellows rotate to different schools daily and weekly doing their student teaching. They are being paid. They officially start teaching in classrooms beginning January 2010."

  1. This absolutely doesn't surprise me. Most of us, if we've been in the system since before Rhee came, are not teachers she or her people hired: we are the teachers already here, the ones she inherited, part of the "uncomfortable reality, the too many who are not up to the demanding job of educating our youth effectively", according to the Master Plan. We're the ones she wants out. But I'm not going until I choose to.

  2. I bet they will probably shut the link down at some point. It only gets worse by the minute.

  3. I met a recent hire on Monday. DCTF has recruited a winter cohort as well.

  4. I am a DCTFer. Yes new teachers were recruited several months ago.

  5. This is definitely true. I am a DCTF teacher and I know for a fact they went ahead and created another "mid-year" cohort. This despite the fact that teachers from the program were involved in the excessing/firing at the end of last school year as well as the RIF this year because there are already TOO MANY. I'm glad my tenure with this program is almost up...

  6. Ms. Rhee is advertising under other websites. As people become aware of what's going on then it seems some of the jobs disappear off the internet. I advise you to make copies of jobs when you see them so you can stay one step ahead of the game.

  7. Can we learn her rationale for a budget source for these new hires?

  8. Kings:

I don't know how we can learn Rhee's budget source since this administration is not transparent. If you have any ideas, please post them here. I'd love to hear them.

  10. I am not shocked or suprised, and at this point I am just numb. It seems that no one can stop this woman. She just does what she wants to do and no one has the balls to stop her. not the Union, not the City Council, not the Parents, not the comunity. NO ONE!!! I am just sick of it.

Report: Rhee spoke to feds on Johnson's behalf
D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee had several conversations last year with a federal inspector general investigating Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson for alleged financial misconduct and inappropriate behavior with female students at a charter school he operated, The Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The paper said Rhee, who once served on the board of the St. Hope school, spoke on behalf of Johnson-- whom she is now engaged to-- calling him "a good guy."

Rhee's previously undisclosed involvement in the investigation is described in a 62-page congressional report on the White House's firing earlier this year of Gerald Walpin, the inspector general for the Corporation for National and Community Service. The report is scheduled to be released today by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif) and Sen Charles E.Grassley (R-Iowa).

Johnson has not been charged with any crimes. Republicans contend that Walpin's firing was politically motivated because Johnson, a former NBA star with the Phoenix Suns, was a high-profile supporter of President Obama. Administration officials said the corporation board had lost confidence in Walpin, 78, who appeared confused and disoriented at a May board meeting. The paper said Walpin is receiving free legal help from a conservative public relations firm associated with the "swift boat" ads that attacked Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kerry in the 2004 campaign.

The report includes a 30-page criminal referral Walpin prepared for the U.S. attorney in Sacramento in August 2008. It described three allegations of inappropriate actions on Johnson's part involving a female minor, who reported being fondled, and two young volunteers, who reported that Johnson went to their apartment and climbed into bed with one of them. Federal and local officials declined to prosecute on the basis of the information in the referral
    .
According to The Times, Rhee met with St. Hope teacher Jacqueline Wong-Hernandez after hearing the allegations and promised to "take care of the situation." Wong-Hernandez said she was later called to a meeting with Johnson and one of the alleged victims and was told by Johnson that he and the 18-year-old girl had spoken privately and "everything was OK between them." Wong-Hernandez left St. Hope in June 2007, telling Rhee that the handling of the incident was a major reason.

Phone and e-mail messages to Rhee's office had not been returned at midday.

Walpin began the probe in 2008, centered on what happened to $848,000 in grants and payments to Johnson's school, St. Hope, from AmeriCorps, the national service organization overseen by the corporation.

Is this just wonderful! MR's husband should seek sole custody of his daughters behind this mess.

    What happened to credibility?

  13. Candi, are you going to say anything about the article in today's Washington Examiner? http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/Exclusive-Congressional-Report-Rhee-did-damage-control-after-sex-charges-against-fiancee-Kevin-Johnson.html

Is this news or is it rehashing of old stuff, as Rhee claims?

  14. I have one question. What in the hell did the council do for the rif teachers as I have heard nothing at all?

    ReplyDelete
  15. As of yet the Council has done nothing for RIF'd teachers as a whole. They made a lot of noise and then nothing. I am just sick of all of it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. For those of you who need to know what the city council is doing for the RIF'D teachers, the answer has to be nothing. What a lot of you may not be aware of is: The Anything shy of 9 votes on any resolution WILL, and I repeat, WILL be vetoed by Fenty. Please be informed.

I did post several entries on the Examiner story which I hope you read. We all should read the links in my 11/23/09 entry. Just click on the links in the story to view. As a critical thinker, I just don't buy what Rhee's spokesperson is saying that it is rehashing old stuff. I expect them to want to sweep everything under the rug. One thing I am sure of it is great that some of our DCPS parents did their homework and fought against Kevin Johnson taking over Eastern SHS.

  19. To date, I am not aware of anything the DC City Council has done as it relates to the RIF'd teachers. To their credit, they did host city council hearings into the wee hours of the morning where teachers, parents and others came out to testify.

  20. Just to throw another angle at this...a lot of the DCTF new cohort members will be Coteaching for their new assignments. Will old teachers be excessed in june to make room for them to take classrooms next year? Just a thought...
